Here we have a really lovely 2007 Harley-Davidson FXSTC Softail Custom, fresh in from Florida and showing just 23,870 miles from new.

This is a bike that has clearly been looked after. It has had just two owners from new, has always been garage kept, and the condition really does speak for itself. The paintwork, chrome and overall presentation are excellent for a bike approaching 20 years old.

The FXSTC Softail Custom is quite a special model in Harley-Davidson history. The Softail Custom name had disappeared from the range after 1999, before Harley brought the FXSTC back for the 2007 model year. It returned with a completely refreshed look and, importantly, Harley’s larger 1,584cc Twin Cam 96B engine together with the 6-speed Cruise Drive gearbox.

The idea was to give riders the look and stance of a traditional American custom or chopper, but in a factory-built Harley that you could actually use every day. The result was the long, low FXSTC with its 21-inch spoked front wheel, wide 200-section rear tyre, ape-hanger handlebars, forward controls and hidden Softail rear suspension.

It is one of those Harleys that looks customised straight out of the factory.

Ours has also had some very worthwhile upgrades.

It has received a Stage 1 upgrade with the ECU mapped accordingly, and has been fitted with a fantastic sounding set of Vance & Hines exhausts together with a Screamin’ Eagle air cleaner. It’s a combination that really suits the Twin Cam 96B and gives the bike that proper deep Harley soundtrack.

The 1584cc Twin Cam 96B is the counterbalanced version of Harley’s Twin Cam engine, specifically suited to the Softail chassis. It gives plenty of low-down torque, while the six-speed gearbox makes the bike a relaxed and enjoyable cruiser.

Visually, it has everything you would want from a proper Softail Custom. The skinny 21-inch front wheel contrasts brilliantly with the huge polished rear wheel and wide tyre, while the black paintwork, chrome engine covers, chrome oil tank and sweeping Vance & Hines pipes give it exactly the right old-school American look.

The tall bars, forward controls, stepped seat and passenger backrest finish the bike off nicely, and it also has a windshield fitted for a bit of extra comfort when covering longer distances.

Most importantly, it hasn’t been excessively modified or turned into something it was never meant to be. It still retains that unmistakable factory FXSTC appearance, just with some sensible performance upgrades added.

This really is a cracking example of the FXSTC. The combination of the first-year 2007 Softail Custom styling, Twin Cam 96B engine, six-speed gearbox and Stage 1 upgrades makes it a very appealing Harley, and with only two owners and 23,870 miles, it has clearly had an easy life.
