KEY INFORMATION
2003 Custom Softail by Keith Baker (Classic Cycle Works) – One-Off Head-Turner
Let’s talk about what’s lurking at the heart of this beast: an 88 cubic-inch RevTech V-twin that’s known as one of the most reliable of its kind. This motor roars to life with a thunderous rumble, and thanks to a freshly overhauled Mikuni carburetor, it’s getting crisp fuel delivery every time you crack the throttle. I had the bike dyno tuned by Matt at MX-Zone, and it now runs absolutely spot-on – we’ve got the printout to prove it. She put down 71.65 bhp @ 4904 rpm and a stump-pulling 77.54 ft/lb of torque @ 3615 rpm, which you really feel every time you roll on. In plain English: the powertrain is dialed in perfectly, starts easy, runs smooth, and pulls like a freight train when you get on it, all while sounding just right through those custom pipes.
Now, the first thing everyone notices is that insane paint job – and pictures hardly do it justice. Keith Baker is a master of custom paint (over 40 years in the game), and he knocked it out of the park on this one. The bike wears a deep metallic purple base, and it’s absolutely engulfed in vivid orange flame graphics licking down the tank and fenders. Look closely and you’ll spot the skulls ghosted in the flames – subtle until they catch the light, then they jump out and grab you. This paintwork is truly show-quality (Keith’s known for award-winning flames), and to have something like this done today would easily cost over £8,000. Everywhere you look, there’s also an abundance of polished billet aluminum parts catching the eye – from the rare 12-spoke billet alloy wheels (these wheels alone were about £1,500 each, and you’ll likely never see another set on a bike like this, the moulds were designed by American Racing Equipment who sold them to Performance Machine. Performance Machine then made the wheels but in extremely low volume.) to the custom billet forward controls and covers. The chrome and billet bits gleam against that wild paint, giving the whole bike a showroom/custom show trophy vibe. It’s the kind of machine you can stare at for ages and keep noticing new details.
Despite being a showstopper, this bike isn’t a trailer queen – it’s fully sorted to ride and enjoy. It has incredibly low mileage, just 2,085 miles from new (the engine isn’t even broken-in by Harley standards!). We just treated it to an oil and filter change for peace of mind, and also put a brand new Metzeler tyre up front to match the rear – so you’ve got fresh, high-quality rubber on both ends. On the road, it feels solid and surprisingly comfortable for a custom (that Softail DNA means you get the hidden rear suspension smoothing out the bumps). It tracks straight, stops well, and that Mikuni-fed RevTech pulls strongly in every gear. Being a 23-year-old custom, it does have a minor quirk: a slight oil leak (think of it as a tiny marking of territory, as many Harleys do!). It’s nothing dramatic – just a small drip typical for an older bike – and it doesn’t affect the performance or reliability one bit. I’m just mentioning it in the spirit of full transparency. Overall condition is fantastic for a bike of this age – paint is stunning, chrome is bright, and everything works as it should.
One of the coolest parts of owning this bike has been the community around it. In fact, Keith Baker himself reached out to us after spotting the bike on our Facebook page, excited to see his old creation still turning heads. He was happy to share more background on the build and the top-shelf parts he used. You know a bike is special when the original builder (a guy who’s been custom-building since the early ‘70s) remembers it and says it’s one of his favourites. Classic Cycle Works (https://classic-cycleworks.co.uk/) has a stellar reputation in the UK custom scene, and this machine is a rolling testimony to that craftsmanship and Keith’s paintwork expertise. It’s not just a custom Harley – it’s a piece of custom bike history.
At the end of the day, this bike is a rolling conversation piece and a head-turning cruiser that you won’t find anywhere else. It’s just as perfect for someone who wants to ride out and steal the show at bike nights as it is for a collector who might display it like the work of art it is. When you pull up on this thing, be prepared for a crowd and lots of questions – it’s that kind of bike. The flames shimmer in the sun, the engine’s got that nostalgic yet strong heartbeat, and the whole vibe of the bike is pure old-school Americana. Viewing is by appointment only, so if you’re as passionate about unique custom bikes as we are, come see it in person – I promise you won’t be disappointed. This is more than a motorcycle; it’s an experience, a conversation starter, and a seriously fun ride all wrapped into one. Come ready to fall in love, because this Classic Cycle Works Softail will make an enthusiast’s heart race. Enjoy the rumble and the admiring looks – this rare beauty deserves an owner who will appreciate every bit of its character and craftsmanship.
