The History of the Harley-Davidson Super Glide

The Super Glide name occupies an important place in Harley-Davidson history.

Introduced in 1971, the original FX Super Glide combined the engine and substantial chassis of Harley-Davidson’s Big Twin models with the slimmer, sportier front end associated with the company’s smaller motorcycles. The result was one of the earliest factory-custom motorcycles: a machine that delivered traditional Harley-Davidson performance while introducing a cleaner, more stripped-back appearance.

That original Super Glide established a formula that would influence Harley-Davidson’s cruiser range for decades.

The Dyna story officially began in 1991 with the introduction of the FXDB Dyna Glide Sturgis. The new Dyna chassis retained the traditional appearance of exposed twin rear shock absorbers but incorporated a rubber-mounted engine, helping to isolate vibration from the rider while preserving the unmistakable pulse and character of a Harley-Davidson Big Twin.

Over the following 26 years, the Dyna family became one of the most recognisable and respected parts of the Harley-Davidson range. Its traditional twin-shock construction, visible engine, strong handling and unmistakably mechanical appearance developed a particularly loyal following.

The Dyna family was eventually retired after the 2017 model year, with several of its historic model names moving into Harley-Davidson’s redesigned Softail range. This has left original Dyna models representing a distinctive and now-discontinued chapter in the company’s history.

What Makes the FXDC Super Glide Custom Special?

The FXDC Super Glide Custom took the clean, purposeful foundations of the standard Super Glide and added considerably more visual detail and comfort.

Its factory specification included a large five-gallon fuel tank, chrome tank-mounted instrument console, polished pullback handlebars, steel-laced wheels, a low two-up seat and an extensive collection of chrome finishes.

The result was a motorcycle that retained the straightforward riding character of the Super Glide while offering the visual presence expected from a Harley-Davidson carrying the “Custom” name.

By 2012, the FXDC had developed into a particularly accomplished version of the Super Glide. It combined the mature Dyna chassis with electronic fuel injection, the 1584cc Twin Cam 96 engine and Harley-Davidson’s six-speed Cruise Drive transmission.

This Particular Motorcycle

This motorcycle has had just one owner from new and has covered only 8,166 miles.

It has arrived with us directly from Florida and its overall presentation is superb. The paintwork retains a deep, glossy finish, the chrome remains bright and the black-finished chassis and engine components present extremely well.

The metallic orange changes beautifully as the light moves across it, while the black lower sections give the motorcycle a much deeper and more substantial appearance. Fine gold and burgundy pinstriping follows the contours of the tank and mudguards, drawing the two colours together without making the design feel overdone.

Traditional Harley-Davidson tank medallions, a chrome tank console and a leather-look Super Glide tank panel complete the finish.

Twin Cam 96 V-Twin Engine

At the heart of the motorcycle is Harley-Davidson’s air-cooled Twin Cam 96 engine.

Its 96 cubic-inch capacity equates to 1,584cc, producing strong low-speed and mid-range torque in exactly the areas where a heavyweight cruiser needs it. Harley-Davidson originally rated the engine at approximately 92lb-ft, or 125Nm, of torque at just 3,000rpm.

This provides relaxed, effortless acceleration without needing to chase engine speed. It is equally happy rolling through town, travelling along country roads or settling into a steady motorway cruise.

Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection provides dependable starting, consistent fuelling and smooth throttle response, while hydraulic self-adjusting lifters help reduce routine maintenance requirements.

The engine is rubber-mounted within the Dyna chassis. It retains the characteristic movement and pulse of a Harley-Davidson at idle but becomes noticeably smoother once the motorcycle is under way.

Visually, the black powder-coated engine benefits from machined cooling-fin edges, chrome rocker covers, chrome casings and the distinctive oval “96 Cubic Inches” air-cleaner cover.

Six-Speed Cruise Drive Transmission

The Twin Cam engine is paired with Harley-Davidson’s six-speed Cruise Drive transmission.

The lower gears make full use of the engine’s abundant torque, while sixth gear reduces engine speed during faster cruising. This gives the motorcycle a more relaxed feel on longer journeys and makes it well suited to both weekend riding and extended touring.

Power is transferred to the rear wheel through a clean and low-maintenance belt final drive.

Aftermarket Chrome Exhaust

This motorcycle has been fitted with a beautifully finished chrome staggered 2-into-2 exhaust system with slash-cut outlets.

The system follows the classic lines of the Dyna and looks entirely at home alongside the motorcycle’s extensive chrome detailing. More importantly, it allows more of the Twin Cam engine’s natural character to be heard.

It produces a deeper and more pronounced V-twin lope, giving the bike the purposeful Harley-Davidson soundtrack it deserves without detracting from its traditional appearance.

The mid controls give the rider greater leverage and control than an extreme forward-control layout, while the low seat makes the motorcycle feel manageable when stopping or manoeuvring at low speed.
