The Yamaha Midnight Star – Classic American Styling, Japanese Engineering

Introduced in 2009, the Yamaha XVS950 Midnight Star was developed to bridge the gap between smaller-capacity cruisers and the larger, heavyweight machines in Yamaha’s established Star motorcycle range. Known as the V Star 950 in the American market, it was designed to deliver the unmistakable presence, character and relaxed riding experience of a traditional American cruiser, combined with the engineering quality, usability and dependability for which Yamaha motorcycles have become renowned.

At its heart sits a beautifully engineered 942cc, air-cooled, 60-degree V-twin engine, featuring electronic fuel injection and a smooth five-speed gearbox. Designed with an emphasis on accessible low-down torque rather than outright performance, the Midnight Star delivers a satisfying V-twin character, effortless cruising ability and a wonderfully relaxed riding experience.

Power is transferred to the rear wheel through a clean and low-maintenance belt-drive system, while its low 675mm seat height, spacious footboards and naturally positioned handlebars provide a comfortable, confidence-inspiring riding position.

Styling was equally important to Yamaha’s designers. The long, low-slung silhouette, sculpted teardrop fuel tank, sweeping steel mudguards, 18-inch front wheel and extensive chrome detailing give the XVS950 the appearance of a considerably larger cruiser. It is a motorcycle that looks equally at home cruising through the countryside or parked outside your favourite café.

Presented in a gorgeous deep metallic burgundy, the paintwork complements the extensive polished chrome engine covers, exhaust system and decorative trim beautifully. The motorcycle retains its classic Midnight Star appearance while benefiting from several subtle modifications that give it a slightly more individual, custom-inspired look.

The rear end has been tastefully modified with a rear fender-delete conversion, aftermarket bullet-style rear indicators and a side-mounted number plate. These changes provide a cleaner, more streamlined appearance without detracting from the motorcycle’s original cruiser styling.

Another particularly useful addition is the genuine Yamaha lockable quick-release windscreen, offering additional wind protection for longer journeys while allowing the screen to be removed when a more stripped-back cruiser appearance is preferred.

Both wheels are fitted with Avon Cobra tyres, which have plenty of tread remaining.

The motorcycle presents extremely well throughout, with attractive paintwork, bright chrome detailing and a tidy overall appearance. There are just a couple of very small stone chips to the fuel tank, which we have highlighted in our accompanying walkaround video for complete transparency. Aside from these minor age-related imperfections, this is a very nicely presented example.

The bike is supplied with its original book pack, including the owner’s documentation and service book containing several stamped service entries. Particularly pleasing is the inclusion of four keys, including the important red Yamaha master key.

This particular example has plenty going for it: sensible mileage, low ownership, useful original documentation, a desirable genuine Yamaha windscreen and tasteful custom modifications that enhance its already impressive appearance.
